- "Magic City" is an imaginary view of Manhattan from ninth floor windows in Harlem. The painting reflects my fascination with the city I have lived in for over thirty years. I should say "my love" of the city that I believe to be the true center of the art world and so much else. Enough said.
- As his career in printing and publishing wound down (the internet!), Gary Conger began a new career by attending classes at New Yorks School of Visual Arts. He studied the methods of old master painters and completed in class a New York cityscape in a style that some compared to Edward Hopper. Encouraged, he threw himself into painting New York cityscapes and especially the rooftop water towers. His first show of paintings in 2008 was called Vanishing New York. The paintings contrasted the old wood water tanks with the new glass buildings rising up all around and towering over them. Congers recent work depicts the water tanks escaping the rooftops, rising up and floating away. Who can blame them?
