Magic City at Night
- Oil on canvas
- I think of this painting as a companion piece to the daytime "Magic City". It's also quite imaginary. From the Harlem studio windows there were always dramatic views of the city at night. I decided to look for the lighted windows in a large canvas painted in dark colors, which I love to paint. Also, the perpetual ambient light of the city makes a lovely purple sky at night. Can you tell I love New York?
- As his career in printing and publishing wound down (the internet!), Gary Conger began a new career by attending classes at New Yorks School of Visual Arts. He studied the methods of old master painters and completed in class a New York cityscape in a style that some compared to Edward Hopper. Encouraged, he threw himself into painting New York cityscapes and especially the rooftop water towers. His first show of paintings in 2008 was called Vanishing New York. The paintings contrasted the old wood water tanks with the new glass buildings rising up all around and towering over them. Congers recent work depicts the water tanks escaping the rooftops, rising up and floating away. Who can blame them?
