- This painting is another in my series of rising water tanks, depicting them as escaping their bonds and blasting off to greener pastures.
- As his career in printing and publishing wound down (the internet!), Gary Conger began a new career by attending classes at New Yorks School of Visual Arts. He studied the methods of old master painters and completed in class a New York cityscape in a style that some compared to Edward Hopper. Encouraged, he threw himself into painting New York cityscapes and especially the rooftop water towers. His first show of paintings in 2008 was called Vanishing New York. The paintings contrasted the old wood water tanks with the new glass buildings rising up all around and towering over them. Congers recent work depicts the water tanks escaping the rooftops, rising up and floating away. Who can blame them?
